Orchids Information: Growing Orchids as a Hobby

Orchids are possibly the most sought after flowers in the world, making growing orchids an enormously popular and satisfying hobby. Why are orchids and orchid growing so popular? Open any book or website about orchids and you will be amazed at the infinite beauty and variety of the orchid’s bloom as well as the number of possibilities that growing orchids presents to the hobbyist. There are also many types of orchids that are relatively easy to grow, providing a hobbyist with hours and hours of pleasure, both from the beauty of the plants and from the thrill of growing them. I’ll get back to the “relatively” part in a minute.

There are over 20,000 species of orchids in the world today and they grow all over the world, with the exception of places that are covered with ice all year round like Antarctica. Some orchids are easily recognizable such as Cattleya orchids, the big orchids you see in corsages. Other orchids are not so recognizable and you may be surprised to find out that the common Lady’s Slipper is an orchid that could be blooming behind your house right now.

There are basically kinds of orchids: Epiphytic orchids and Terrestrial orchids. Many orchids live on trees in rain forests. They are not dependent on the trees for anything other than someplace to “roost.” Terrestrial orchids live on the ground.

So, as to the “relatively” part of how easy growing orchids is…growing orchids is not like growing Philodendrons or Asparagus ferns. You don’t just buy them at your local grocery store, stick them in a window, and water them once a week. Orchids need more care than most common house plants. First of all, you are going to need to choose the right kind of orchid plant that best fits conditions in your home, or outside of your home, if you plan to grow orchids outside. Or you are going to have to plan how you will provide the necessary conditions. You will have to tailor the conditions and care you provide for your orchids depending on whether the orchids you have acquired are Epiphytic or Terrestrial, and which part of the world they are originally from.

You will also have to schedule a few minutes every day to spend checking up your orchids to make sure that they are “happy” in the environment and that there are no pests or diseases present on your plants.

When you are no longer a newbie hobbyist and growing orchids becomes easy to you, you might want to learn how to propagate them and hybridize them. These are the things about growing orchids that make them so fascinating. With more than 25,000 types and 100,000 hybrids available now and people all over the world are presently attempting to create even more orchid species that will have more spectacular or interesting blooms or be more hardy or even have more beautiful foliage, growing orchids is an addictive hobby.

So is growing orchids for you? Do you love beautiful flowers? Do you have enough space in or around your house to keep plants? Do you have a little time to spend researching and learning about your new plant or plants and some time to spend caring for your orchids? If so, growing orchids may be the perfect hobby for you!
